The Numbers

Lisa Halverstadt from the Morning Report Regional Task Force monitors homeless data in the region, and has found from October 2024 to September 2025 that “just 212 more people sought homelessness services for the first time than moved into housing.” This is particularly substantial when comparing this to previous years where this number was in the thousands. She also found a 13% drop in people falling into homelessness, and a 17% increase in people finding housing.

The Future

All of this is great news. The ammount of people getting housing, and taking the biggest step twoards beating homelessness, has almost reached the number of new people landing on the streets. Furthermore, having an increase in housing success rates and a decreasing in new homelessness cases, more people are getting the help they need while less people are ending up needing help at all. With the current force of social workers San Diego has, having a decreased flow of new homeless people will allow them to dedicate more time to each of their clients, further increasing the rate of people getting in housing.

If San Diego’s trend of declining homelessness continues, thousands of lives can be saved, and a record amount of people can be placed in sheltering. If the ammount of people getting sheltering surpasses the new flow of homelessness, than this might just be the key to end this crisis once and for all.
